Задание 3 из 4

Read the text about help signs. Fill in the gaps with the correct titles. *Signal for help* Being lost in the wilderness can be scary, but staying calm and signalling for help is crucial. Here are some ways to get noticed:

1) _____________: this is the most classic way to get noticed. Find a clear, open area, gather dry kindling and larger branches, and build a fire. Keep it burning as long as possible and try to build it large enough to be visible from the air. This method is particularly effective in open spaces like beaches or mountain peaks.

2) _____________: if you have a mirror, a shiny CD, or even a piece of aluminium foil, you can use it to reflect sunlight and create flashes of light. This can be seen from great distances. Additionally, if you have brightly coloured clothing, hang it on a tree or lay it out on the ground.

3) _____________: a whistle is a powerful signalling tool due to its high-pitched sound that carries over long distances. Always carry a whistle when venturing into the wilderness. If lost, blow the whistle in short, distinct bursts, spaced evenly. The sound will attract attention, and its repetitive nature will distinguish it from natural sounds. If you don’t have an emergency whistle, use a metal object, strike it against a rock to make a loud, metallic noise.

4) _____________: if you are fortunate enough to have an understanding of Morse code and have an emergency whistle, use it to communicate distress signals. S-O-S (· · · - - - · · ·) is the universally recognized distress signal.

5) _____________: if you have time, gather branches or rocks to form a large “SOS” on the ground. Make it as big and clear as possible.

Once you’ve signalled, it’s best to stay in one place. Moving around makes it harder for rescuers to find you. Besides, focus on staying hydrated and keeping warm, as these are priorities while you wait for help. One of the most important things is don’t give up hope. Even if you don’t see rescue efforts immediately, maintain your spirits and keep signalling.

Prevention is the key! What does it mean? Tell someone your plans. It means that you should always inform someone of your route and expected return time. Bring a map and compass: familiarise yourself with your surroundings before heading into the wilderness. Carry a survival kit: pack essential items like a first-aid kit, extra clothing, a flashlight, a whistle, etc.

Remember: being prepared and knowing how to signal for help can make a huge difference in a survival situation.

Audio script:

Speaker 1: The air was thick with humidity, the sounds overwhelming. I knew I shouldn’t have taken the shortcut. My phone’s battery is dying. I’m surrounded by trees. Hope someone finds me soon.

Speaker 2: A sudden crack, a sharp pain. I was stuck on the trail. There is a beautiful view, but not so much fun when you have injured your leg!

Speaker 3: Yesterday we learned how to build a fire with nothing but sticks and leaves and even how to make a shelter from scratch. I feel like a real survivalist now.

Speaker 4: Wish I had a water bottle right now! Feeling weak and dizzy. Hoping for a miracle!

Speaker 5: It all happened so fast. A twisted ankle, a face full of fear, but I remembered what they taught us. My heart was racing! But I stayed calm and followed the instructions. Guess I can handle a medical emergency now!
